“I focus on how to find the solution, not on how complex the problem is” - Sujoy Krishna Das

Nov 12, 2014

We had a brief conversation with Mr. Sujoy Krishna Das, who is one of our esteemed tutors. He is an experience of over 2 years of making educational video tutorials for various sites in India and abroad. He employs innovative tutoring techniques to ensure that his students are completely prepared to answer any kind of difficult questions in their exams.

1. My Private Tutor: How long have you been tutoring? Share a few of your tutoring approach.

Sujoy Krishna Das: I’ve been tutoring for more than 2 years. When I was in college, I was the topper of Computer Science & Engineering (CSE) department. Every now and then my classmates used to ask me to explain some concepts to them. So instead of teaching them individually each time, I recorded my tutorial videos, and posted them on YouTube. My YouTube journey as an online teacher started since then. Now my videos are being watched across the world and are highly acclaimed. My tutoring approach is- I believe in technology enhanced learning.

As you can see in my Numerical Methods videos, I’ve shown that how you can solve various academic and real life problems easily using your Casio fx-991ES Scientific Calculator. I teach lots of cool tricks to my students. Sometimes you can simply find the answers without doing the Math, by just programming your calculator to make it solve the problem for you!

I beautifully and effectively use MS-Paint, Windows Journal, Windows Movie Maker, Scientific Calculators Casio fx-991ES and Casio fx-82MS to solve problems and explain concepts to my students.

2. LearnPick: How do you devise lesson plans to help students deal with the cut-throat competition in today’s academic scenario?

Sujoy Krishna Das: Says…

1. I teach with practical approach. I first help my student solve the problems, and then I slowly move along to the theory part. That quickly develops confidence in students.

2. I make the students relate various concepts / techniques they learn so that they can use them suitably. For example- root of a quadratic equation can be found using various methods, like using Quadratic Formula, using Newton Raphson Method, Secant Method etc.

When we need the answer quickly, we use the quadratic formula, and when we need a precise answer, we can use any of the complex methods. Similarly when solving a problem, I hint a few other possible ways to solve the problem.

3. I tell my students where they can apply the concepts they learn, in real life. This generates a zeal for learning in them. This technique is helpful teaching math to students of 10th and 12th standard.

4. I focus on how to find the solution, not on how complex the problem is. Problem solving is a critical art in today’s world.

5. I specially select questions (most of the times, my questions are self made, they cannot be found on any book) which not only demonstrate the concepts, but help them understand different kinds of problems they can face during the exam.

3. LearnPick: Share a few tips for MBA aspirants.

Sujoy Krishna Das: Take the classes and learn the concepts taught in college. But keep your eyes and mind open to watch people and learn how they manage/tackle their problem. Management is all about real life problem solving.

And do follow some non-traditional/general books available on management besides your academic books. I’ve came across some good books on real life management.

4. LearnPick: What do you think are the recent trends in education? How have you been upgrading yourself to fit into that picture?

Sujoy Krishna Das: Now the trend is interactive learning. Institutes/Universities are using various interactive teaching methods such as video tutorials, live projection, power-point presentation, digital blackboard etc. as teaching aids. Even our present Govt. is interested in spreading education employing the internet and portable tablet computers (say Aakash Tablet) to the remotest location across India. You can consider the NPTEL movement for knowledge transfer among IITs. So, we can easily say that the future is technology enhanced learning.

With my online tutorials and interactive teaching aids, I can deliver my teaching prowess to not only  India, but across the world.

5. LearnPick: Share a few of your students’ success stories.

Sujoy Krishna Das: Two of my students are employees of IISCO and L&T.

6. LearnPick: How has My Private Tutor helped you with your tutoring?

Sujoy Krishna Das: By providing me a easy to use platform to deliver my knowledge to a broad spectrum of students across India.

7. LearnPick: Some suggestions to LearnPick:

1. You should give ads of relevant community/official sites of each university across India offering tuition. For West Bengal board, I can suggest some – www.mywbut.com, www.exametc.com, www.indiastudychannel.com etc.

2. For free tutor profiles, there should be an option called- My Profile Visitors where tutors can see which student(s) have visited their profile along with their contact details. I’m not saying that you should provide contact details of every student to free tutors, but tutors should get details of those students who have visited their profile.

3. Make a section called Ask a Tutor. Where registered/non-registered students can ask any question for a price. And your range of tutors will answer them.

4. Provide a section for Question Paper submission, where students/tutors can upload question papers and earn credit points. Also students can ask for complete solution for a question paper for a price.

5. Announce some contests among students/tutors on some knowledge sharing/out of the box ideas.
