Jan 30, 2021

English language has been given prime importance in education since many decades. Professional English has already stepped in the curriculum of most of the engineering colleges in India since 1980s. English is considered as a mandatory language for technologists and engineers. Many companies don’t want to appoint candidates due to their ability to communicate in English.

It is mainly happening as English teachers have not got the exposure to the sphere of engineering and technology. So, it is obvious that there is lack of positive result in respect to communication in English. Again, English tutors must be notified about the trends and developments in technological areas.

Present educational ecosystem demands English tutors:

Gone are those days when English teachers used to remain confined in the walls of poems, prose and school syllabus. The new age is demanding English tutors in every field for developing communicative competence.

There is another paradox. It says that one common course is added in the curriculum of various streams of engineering. The language expertise required for civil engineering differs from printing technology or Information Technology. It is assumed that proper English teachers may not have adequate knowledge of engineering subjects. Hence, it is necessary to engage the teachers in multiple streams so that they can acquire specialist knowledge in the field of requirement.

The rise of spoken English:

There is an increasing demand of Spoken English everywhere. It is because many students study in schools where regional language is the medium of instruction and communication. For example, Bengali, Punjabi, Tamil, Gujarati, etc. These students face big issues later in life when they try to enter in the professional field. So, they turn to English tutors to sharpen their English speaking ability. There are various institutions that offer the course of Spoken English, and pose as a golden opportunity for the English teachers to earn good package.

Professional English and its specification:

Professional English courses have got different avatars throughout the world.

  • CLIL or Content and Language-Integrated Learning

People are pursuing these courses for entering into a lucrative career field. Here, the English tutors focus on target based approaches that are suitable for the specific industry.

Professional English is regarded as a continuation of General English. It is assumed that the students have already got their basic knowledge of linguistic competence and they must proceed towards grasping better command over specific domain based English language.

The urge is on collaboration:

As the professional English courses have already got success, the subject teachers and the content teachers should work in collaboration for choosing the relevant materials and design the pedagogical process for emphasizing on grammatical and oral or lexical items along with the features of the respective genre.

It will help the learners to acquire linguistic and content knowledge. But, there is a valid need of structural transformation rather than a separate English department. It is to execute the process of teaching and learning on a regular basis. The students can get maximum benefits from a collaborative team teaching of subject and language.

Modern English in current India:

The most prominent characteristics of modern English is the unmatchable adaptable and receptive heterogeneousness. Most importantly, the simplicity and readiness of the English words that are borrowed from Greek, Indian, Scandinavian, Latin, and French are worth praising.

As per 2011 Census, around 10.6% that is 129 million Indians used to speak English. Around 0.02% that is 259,678 Indians use English as their first language. Again, around 6.8% that is 83 millions Indians use English as their second language. 3.8% that is 46 million people use it as their third language. English is considered as the second most communicative language in India.
