What's Your Question?
Answer

The retail industry is a lot more than just selling of a product. A few years back, retail giants would hire freshers who knew to "sell" a product. Today, giving customers more than just a product is a huge demand. Customers know what they want and how it should be presented to them. These days an MBA specializing in Retail Management is always an added advantage if you want to grow in the corporate Retail ladder. You could use this degree to land up with a global retail giant or join an e-commerce start up or may be also become an entrepreneur in your own right.

Just an advice though, there is no degree that can replace the learning you would get by experiencing the job hands-on. Be it retail, telecom or hospitality or any industry for that matter. Ask yourself what is it that you really love. Does it involve interacting with people? Or do you like working around systems? Are you a back-end or a front-end kind of person?

Retail is one such industry where you must interact with your consumers to understand their needs and what makes them happy. It is one industry where a lot of people have struggled with years of hardwork and on-floor selling and now heading the department in global retail companies. The career prospects in India will be lucrative as our country is yet to reach the level retail global giants are today. Thus, taking up a course in retail management wouldn't be a bad idea. The great deal starts after you get the degree and how smartly you pave your way up into the system.

Within retail there are plenty of great departments you could work in - HR/Training, IT (as Apps have become the new best thing), Planning & Purchase, Designing (although a degree from a reputed fashion designing institute will be important) or Operations as the backbone of retail after the product is Operations which means - Running the store/brand/outlet.

Great career prospects come with hard work(in the initial days), passion to learn and perform and great networking / people management skills.

Wish you all the best!
