  1. CELL MEMBRANE o Definition- cell membrane is the structure that seperates the external environmentfromt e internal environment of the cell. lit is the only barrier between the external n internal environment in an animal cell while oplants in additon have an external layer of cell wall .. Cell membrane is not rigid like cell wall hence cannot provide a rigid structure to the cell .
  2. STURCTURE OF CELL MEMBRANE ' Sandwich like arrangement is present ' Protein layer is sandwiched between lipid bilayer ' Lipid bilayer is arranged in such a way that Hydropilic heads are located on the outermost n innermost side of the cell membrane ' Hydrophobic tails face each other ' Thus this arrangement prevents the cell membrane from getting damaged
  3. Components of cell membrane ' Lipid— present as lipid bilayer e Preteins- - 2 types ' Surface proteins —loosely attached to the cell membrane ' Transmembrane proteins — these are completely embedded in the cell membrane ..They form tunnel proteins ' Carbohydrates- attached with proteins they form the receptors n other structures
  4. XTRACELLULAR FLUID G tycocalyx (extracelluiar carbohydrates) Glycolipid Integral protein with channel Integral glycoprotei 2 nrn
  5. Functions of cell membrane ' -maintains transport across the cell membrane Prevents the cell from Dehydration ' possesses receptors for drugs ' Posssses hormone receptors ' Helps in action potential or nerve impulse conduction ' Allow only some substances to enter cell hence protect from cell damage
