  1. TYPES OF MUSCLES IN HUMAN BODY Muscles comprise about half of human body's weight. They are divided into three categories 1. Skeletal muscles 2. Smooth muscles 3. Cardiac muscles SKELETAL MUSCLES: They are voluntary i.e, we can control their movements. They are attached to bones. Hence, the name skeletal muscles. They move bones by contracting and relaxing in response to voluntary messages received from brain. They have a striated appearance. SMOOTH MUSCLES: They are involuntary. They are present in walls of hollow organs throughout the body. Contraction and relaxation is controlled by autonomous nervous system. It's purpose is to advance the movement of substances by contraction. CARDIAC MUSCLES: They are found in myocardium of heart. They are involuntary. They are striated.
