"In-vitro " means in glass. Thus In- vitro fertilisation (IVF) is a fertilisation process where an egg is combined with sperm outside the body, in glass containers such as beakers, test tubes, or petri dishes. The fertilised egg (zygote) undergoes embryo culture for a few days, and is then transferred to the same or another woman's uterus, for establishing a successful pregnancy.
IVF may be used to overcome female infertility due to problems with the fallopian tubes, making inatural in- vivo fertilisation difficult. It can also assist in male infertility, due to a defect in sperm quality .
