Degree of polarity is expressed in terms of dipole moment, i.e., the product of charge and distance between the tow charged ends. Dipole moment of non-polar diatomic molecule is zero. But in the case of tri-atomic, tetra-atomic etc. molecules, it is not so. dipole moment depends upon geometry of the compound. In the same way, trans-isomers have zero dipole moment while cis-isomers have certain dipole moment which is not equal to zero. This is because the trans -isomer have same functional group at opposite ends which cancels the pull and results in zero dipole moment whereas the cis-isomer has functional group attached to same sides which doesn't get cancels and hence results in some net dipole moment which is not zero
