In the late 1800's , Elizabeth Sornam Cornelius as Mrs. E.S. Appasamy was then known, was so touched and positively affected by her student life at Epiphany school at Pune run by the Sisters of Wantage, that sometime in the summer of 1923 began discussions regarding the possibility of opening a school at Madras, that would extend to girls an all round education like the one she enjoyed at Pune. With the able advice of Miss. Mac Dougall, Principal of Women's Christian College and prayerful counsel of the Swedish Missionary Dr. Larson and Christian medical missionaries Drs. Jesudasan and Paton, objectives and ideals took form and shape, those, that would profoundly impact the education of girls in South India for gernerations to come.On February 24th , 1924 the school was started with three boarders and three-day scholars, in a bungalow at Pallavaram. Right from day one it was God-ordained that only the best should serve on the teaching faculty and this fact was amply justified by its very first Principal, Mrs. Kamala Sathianadhan, who was the first woman graduate of Madras university. Being a distinguished student herself she helped shape Vidyodaya into becoming what it is. It was she who christened the school 'VIDYODAYA;.In April 1926, Vidyodaya found a new home in Santhome. The same year the Government recognized the school as a 'special school'. The pupils by now numbered 165 and so the need for a more permanent place to house the school became necessary. Education was oriented to preparing the students for the S.S.L.C. examination and the first batch took the recognized exam in 1931.The year 1938 saw the purchase of 13.5 acres from the Corporation of Madras, and Vidyodaya found its permanent home in T.Nagar. Dr. P. Subbarayan laid the foundation stone on March 11, 1938 and it was indeed a proud day for Mrs. E.S. Appasamy when the then Governor of Madras Presidency Lord Erskine formally lit the traditional 'kuthuvillaku' and declared open the school in its very own premises on November 8, 1938. Rabindranath Tagore visited the school in 1934 and commended its achievements and called it as 'The Shantiniketan of South India'.In May 1951, because of the high costs that came about as a result of the war years, the school was handed over to the Government to be run as a Public School. Two years later the school was handed back to the Founder who along with the rallying support of parents and well-wishers undertook to build up the school; with renewed vigour. Today it is run as Vidyodaya Girls' Higher Secondary School, a Government-aided Institution.

Additional Details
In 1972, the Vidyodaya Academy was born , affiliated to the Council for Indian School Certificate, but in 1984, it chose to adopt the Tamil Nadu State Matriculation system of education and was renamed, Vidyodaya Matriculation Higher Secondary Academy. Vidyodaya celebrated its Golden Jubilee in 1974 and its Diamond Jubilee in 1984. The Pre-primary sections of both the schools have since been integrated into the Vidyodaya Pre-primary School, and follows a meaningfully designed curriculum.
From her very humble beginnings, Vidyodaya has grown to a present strength of about 2500 students and serves the educational needs of children from all over India and abroad. To top it all, Mrs. Appasamy's commitment stemmed from a deep-rooted faith in the Bible. To her it was no ordinary piece of literature. It was God's eternal Word. Hence, very aptly, the Cornerstone of Vidyodaya was taken from Isaiah chapter 60, verses 1 – 10. A truly prophetic vision, that she firmly believed God would do wonders, in and through the live of every student at Vidyodaya.

At Epiphany School, through her encounter with Pundit Ramabai, a Sanskrit scholar, social reformer and a charismatic Christian revival preacher, she spent much time in prayer and fasting at the famous 'Mukti' orphanage, where she worked as a teacher , for a period of 2 years. Her marriage on December 26th, 1907 to Rao Bahadur Paul Appasamy, an imminent barrister, did little to change her desire to serve as a social worker, fund raiser and Convention Speaker. It was on one such occasion at Kerala, that she met the great Man of God, Sadhu SunderSingh, whose fellowship and visits to her home only fueled her desire the more, to influence her generation and the ones to follow, in the field of education for girls.

It is no wonder, that her daughter Miss. Vimala Appasamy, who incidentally happened to be one among the first six students of Vidyodaya, devoted her life too, to the building and running of the Institutions. She ensured that her mother's death in 1963 did not see the end of her vision.

As the winds of change continuously blow, Vidyodaya endeavours to provide a value-based education of extraordinary quality to all eligible students, irrespective of caste, colour or creed. Dedicated and well-qualified staff ensure high academic excellence and a holistic development of the students. The syllabus includes co-curricular and extra-curricular activities built on foundations of love, truth , service and sacrifice. They include Western and Indian Music, Indian Dance, General Knowledge, Human Need Education, Home Science, Hygiene, Seminars and Workshops, Exhibitions, Debates, Project work, Dramatics and Role-play, Gardening and Nature Walk –all forming an essential part of the daily routine.

In short , student life in Vidyodaya is a way of growing up. Everything has a meaning , a purpose, a reason to be.
