The radical change in the world has flown the fountain of technology. When today’s teachers were students, encyclopedias and libraries were the sources of information, whereas, when our children are students, the internet has occupied the king’s chair of knowledge. The present students can get the answer in a jiffy by clicking on few buttons. The libraries are not getting much attraction from today’s youth. Instead, Google has been the star attraction. The current tides are evolving with the ongoing trends.
How is the present generation learning?
We can rename the today’s learners as “digital natives.” They process and consider information in a unique way that is different from the previous days. They gather all the information from various sources in the form of “hypertext.” Visual propaganda has entered the education world and help in the creation of images quickly. The virtual games and videos support them in developing their visual-spatial skills. They know how to discover things. Nowadays, learners are least interested in the little textual studies from the books; rather they concentrate more on the ‘audio-visual-virtual’ medium.
What is the educational goal for the Generation 2K learners?
We can categorize the teaching approaches as per the teaching strategies.
It has two faced goals:-
• Knowledge transmission by the teachers to the learners.
• Facilitating the pupils’ self-expression and autonomous learning
The former approach is termed as ‘convergent teaching.' The later one is directed as ‘divergent teaching.' The Convergent method is teacher-centered and highly structured. Here, the students are passive recipients of information, and their merits are measured by examinations, whereas, the divergent approach is student-centered, flexible and the learners take part in the learning process actively. Their values are proved by self-evaluation and teacher-evaluation.
What should the educators do to meet the need of the future learning?
The trainers are seeking a new course of action for addressing the demands of the current dynamic educational system and the increasing complexity. Though, acquisition of distinct knowledge as a useful method for preparing the students for the productive functioning, yet the different approach is required. There is a simultaneous need for creative expression and autonomous growth along with the basic academic skills like reading, writing, and arithmetic.
What approach should we take for the today’s learning realm?
We must teach the students about the importance of individual differences. We must look for distinct expression to deal with the students with special needs. The rate of learning should allow the students to work with their own paces. Although every student learns the same material, the tutors must apply different methods, media, and techniques for catering to the individual differences regarding personalities, characteristics, and abilities. Hence, a ‘multi- convergent’ approach must be adopted for utilizing the aptitudes and the inclinations for learning purpose and attainment of a higher degree of achievements. The students can taste the sense of competence and experience success with enhanced motivation. This approach has a better potential for bringing success than the typical reality of the students who have learning difficulties and struggle via remediation bonding with negative experiences of failure and sense of inferiority.
Individual Difference through divergent learning – The appropriate way of today’s learning
We can expect the individual differences under different teaching to be the suitable productive approach for its emphasis on the self-reliance, active, autonomous and independent learning of the students. Subsequent modifications with ongoing assessments result in a ‘guided-divergent’ perspective that is more methodically structured.
Digital Media- the NEW input in divergent learning
Children’s exposure to media and technology affects their brain. The wiring of the brain works is organized as per the exposed stimuli. The young generation is differently wired regarding literacy from the earlier generation due to the extreme subjection to various types of stimuli. The evolution of the brain wiring leads to the opening of the digital world to the younger lot. Today’s learners are comfortable in connecting and socializing via experimenting ‘hands-on-learning’ by social network websites, MySpace, Emails, Google, Facebook, Twitter and much more. Lateral approach is taken where the students learn from the peers as well as the non-traditional mediums like the internet.
The outcome of the 21st century’s learning mechanism
21st-century curriculum makers must focus on the blending of particular skills like content knowledge, literacies, and expertise that will aid the juniors to succeed in their personal and professional world. The framework involves a massive range of specific outcomes like problem-solving, collaborative work with others, managing time and goal, creative thinking, critical thinking, adapting to change, practicing media and information literacy, applying advanced technology and finally self-directing.
As a result, the schools are going beyond the concentration on the fundamental competency in core subjects for the promotion of the grasping of academic contents at the higher levels by stitching the interdisciplinary themes into the substantial topics:- entrepreneurial literacy, global awareness, business, economic, health and civic literacy. Hence, the new trend of less memorization of chapters with more emphasis on connection making and thinking through problem-solving and performing visual and kinesthetic activities over mere listening and reading has occupied the ruling chair of the new learning world of the 21st century.
