Ask a QuestionThe first definition came from Allen (1980), who defined sustainable development as a "development that is likely to achieve lasting satisfaction of human needs and improvement of the quality of human life."
Most systematic definition came from Robert Repetto (1986), who defined sustainable develop-ment as a development strategy that tnanges all assets, natural resources and human resources, as well as financial and physical assets for increasing long term wealth and well being. Sustainable development as a goal rejects policies and practices that support current living standard by depleting the Productive base, including the natural resources.
Sustainable development contains two key concepts :
a) Needs, especially the needs of the poor people in the world, to which overriding priority is essential and
b) Limitations created by technology and social organisation regarding the capacity of the environment to satisfy both present and future needs.
