  Question: An object is placed at a distance of 15cm in front of a convex lens of focal length 30cm. Find the nature and position of the image.

Distance of the object from optical centre of the convex lens (u)= 15 c.m. Focal length of the convex lens (v)= 30 c.m. Let's, distance of image formed from optical centre= v c.m. Now, applying lens formula, 1/v - 1/u = 1/f; or, 1/v -1/15= 1/30 or, 1/v= 1/15 - 1/30 or, 1/v= - 1/30 or,v= -30 So, from sign convention formula of lens image will be formed on same side of the object and 30 cm from optical centre. Given Let Distance of object be u = 15cm, focal length of convex lens, f = 30cm, Position of image, v = ?

Hence 1st apply, len's formula and sign convention and re-arrange the equation to find the value of v.

so 1/v - 1/u = 1/f ;

after solving we get v = - 30cm. So image is formed on the same side of the object and its nature is erect and virtual

Here,u= -15cm f=30 cm Now,by lens formula, 1/v-1/u=1/f Thus,v= -30 cm Nature of the image is real and inverted

Here u = -15 , f = 30, from lens formula 1/v - 1/u = 1/f , v = -30, so image is on same side of object at 30cm from lens which is focus itself, and is virtual and erect.

Apply sign convention for convex lens.all distances are measured from the optic centre,which is the geometric mid point of a lens.any distance measured in the direction of light is positive and opposite to the direction of light is negative...so u = -15,v = ? f = +30 .formula for lens is 1/f =1/v -1/u...so 1/30 =1/v -(-1/15) . 1/30 =1/v + 1/15 . 1/30 - 1/15 =1/v.. on calculating 1/v = -1/30 .
