the basic difference is however based on the motive of the farmer.subsistence farming is basically done to fulfill the farmers and his family's need thus the word 'subsistence' is used here.the methods used in the farming are orthodox.land holdings are small , no modern inputs are used and this type of farming is generally seen in under developed as well as developing countries.

however in commercial farming the farmers produce not to consume themselves but for the motive of earning profits out of it . they use modern techniques and inputs to maximise their profits.generally it is seen in developed countries.
