In information technology, a protocol is the special set of rules that end points in a telecommunication connection use when they communicate. Protocols specify interactions between the communicating entities. Protocols exist at several levels in a telecommunication connection. For example, there are protocols for the data interchange at the hardware device level and protocols for data interchange at the application program level.

Protocols are basically needed because it's important for the receiver to UNDRSTAND the sender. In computer communications, protocols also make sure the message gets to its destination properly, in entirety, and with out distortion.

Protocols means any set of guidelines which are intended to guide some task.Like if we are going to deliver a lecture we must follow some protocols like we will tell our students that at this particular time i will giving my lecture. Before going to class i must prepare that lecture thoroughly. What if I am not doing so, definately my lecture will not end in a good note. My students will not be able to understand their doubts clearly.So, we need to follow protocols before doing any task.
