The land on the earth, say lithosphere, is not a single piece of land. It is divided. The geothermal energy below this crustal part (land) caused these pieces of land to collide, depart, or push against each other. 

These pieces of land are referred to as plates or Tectonic plates. There are seven major plates and thirteen minor plates. 

The major plates are the Pacific plate, North American plate, South American Plate, African plate, Eurasian plate, Indo-Australian plate, and Antarctic plate. It is the Pacific plate on which the whole Pacific ocean is located. And on the Indo-Australian plate is India, the Indian Ocean and Australia are located.
