  3. Formation of Soil Soil is formed by the process of weathering Weathering is the process of breaking down of rocks or other material into smaller particles due to long exposure to atmosphere Weathering agents are : 1) wind 2) water 3) Temperature 4) pressure
  4. Weathering Process Heating of rocks by sun, cooling by rain In winter water got frozen in rocks Ice in rocks led to cracks Growth of roots of trees led to cracking of rocks Day and night temperature variations and action of wind and water for years together led to soil formation
  5. Humus :- when soil mixes with dead remains of plants and animals it forms humus
  6. Composition of Soil Minerals Insects and worms Humus Water Microbes Air
  7. soil Profile 1--10R ? i??•r-•
  8. Name of Layer O B ( sub soil) C Bedrock Appearance ver dark Dark in colour, soft porous Light Harder Very hard Activity Composition Humus and minerals Rich in minerals Unweathered parent rock Feature It has humus Provides shelter to many decomposers like microbes and worms Plants roots grow till this area Infertile, rain water gets collected in this layer (Groundwater) Water cannot penetrate in this layer
  9. Name of Layer O A ( Top Soil) B ( sub soil) Bedrock Appearance ver dark Dark in colour, soft porous Light Harder Very hard Activity Composition Decom osed leaves and organic matter Humus and minerals Rich in minerals Weathered parent rock Unweathered parent rock Feature It has humus Provides shelter to many decomposers like microbes and worms Plants roots grow till this area Infertile, rain water gets collected in this layer Water cannot penetrate in this layer
  10. Types of Soil Sandy Soil Soil Clayey Soil Loamy
  11. Sandy Soil Composition :- limestone , granite, shale. Use: it is used for construction of buildings Water holding capacity :- Less Air holding capacity:- good
  12. Clayey Soil Composition: More clay Use: used for pottery and making bricks Water holding capacity: Good Air holding capacity: not good
  13. Loamy Soil Composition:- Sand, Clay, Silt Use :- used for gardening and growing crops Water holding capacity :- good Air holding capacity :- good
