Law of constant proportions : A pure chemical compound always consists of the same elements that are combined together in a fixed ( or definite ) proportion by mass. Atomic Mass Unit (u ): An atomic mass unit may be defined as the mass of one twelfth ( 1 / 12 ) of the mass of one atom of carbon taken as 12. Gram Atomic Mass : The atomic mass of an element expressed in grams which is numerically equal to the mass in u. Molecules : Molecule represents a group of two or more atoms ( same or different ) chemically bonded to each other and held tightly by strong attractive forces OR A molecule can be defined as the smallest particle of an element or a compound that is capable of an independent existence and shows all the properties of that substance. Atomicity . The number of the atoms constituting a molecule of an element represent its Atomicity.
  2. IONS : An atom or group of atoms having positive or negative charges is called Ion. Chemical Formulae : Chemical formula may be defined as the short hand representation of the name of a molecule in terms of the symbols of the constituting atoms. Valency : Valency is defined as the combining capacity of an atom with atoms of other element Mole Concept : a) A mole denotes Avogadro's number ( No or NA = 6.022 x 1023) of particles ( atoms, molecules or ions ). b) The mass of 1 mole of a substance is equal to its relative atomic mass OR molecular mass in gms. c) The atomic mass of an element gives us the mass of ONE atom of that element in atomic mass unit (u). d) Mass of one mole of atom of that element ( Molar Mass ) we have to change the unit of atomic mass from u to g. Examples - a) b) c) d) a) b) c) d) a) b) c) d) Atomic mass of hydrogen = 1 u So gram atomic mass of hydrogen = 1 g 1 u hydrogen has only ONE atom of hydrogen Whereas 1 g hydrogen has 1 mole atoms (6.022 x 1023 atoms of hydrogen ) Atomic mass of oxygen = 16 u So gram atomic mass of oxygen = 16 g 16 u oxygen has only ONE atom of oxygen Whereas 16 g oxygen has 1 mole atoms (6.022 x 1023 atoms of oxygen ) Molecular mass of water = 18 u So gram molecular mass of water = 18 g 18 u water has only ONE molecule of water Whereas 18 g water has 1 mole molecules (6.022 x 1023 molecules of water )
