  1. Why are mitochondria called as powerhouses of cell? Mitochondria are small, spherical or cylindrical organelles. They are about 150 times smaller than the nucleus. There are about 100-150 mitochondria present in each cell. Red blood cells do not have mitochondria. They are made of double membrane wall. The inner membrane is folded into finger like structures called cristae. The area inside the cristae is called as matrix. The Kreb's cycle takes place in the matrix. They are responsible for cellular respiration, a process through which cell derives its energy to do work. Hence, they are also known as powerhouses of the cell. 4 Mitochondrial DNA 3 Lamellæ 3.1 Inner mem%rane 5 Metri* granule 3.11 Inner boundary membrane 3.12 Cristal membrane 3.2 Matrix 3.3 Cristæ 6 Ribosome 7 ATP synthase 2 Intermem brane space 2.1 Intracristal space 2.2 Peripheral space 1 Outer membrane 1.1
