  1. Chandra Gupta- I founder of gupta dynasty Samudragupta son of Chandragupta- I Harishena was the poet in the court of Samudragupta who composed a poem which is inscribed In Ashokan pillar at Allahabad. This special kind of inscription is known as prashastis (to praise) The prashasti about Samudragupta was inscribed which compares him with warrior and he is equal to god. Samudragupta also captured many ganas and collected taxes and tributes from them. The conquered Dakshinapatas and later asked them to rule back. Descendants of Kushanas and shakas and rulers from Sri Lanka offered Samudragupta daughters for marriage. Genealogy- Samudragupta- he used his father's title maharaj-adhiraja Mother Father Son Kumara devi, lichchhavi gana Chandragupta- I He had title maharaj-adhiraja Chandragupta- Il, kalidasa poet and aryabhata the astronomer lived in his court. Archaeologists also found rulers by biographies written apart from genealogy One such example is Harshavardana The court poet banabhatta of Harshavardana wrote his wrote Harshacharita, biography of Harshavardana. Xaun Zang a poet also spent lot of time at Harshavardana's court. Harshavardana (king of Thanesar) conquered kingdom of kanuj and Bengal but was stopped by Chalukya dynasty, Pulakeshin ll. Pallavas, Chalukyas and Pulakeshin: Pallavas- capital kanchipuram Chalukyas- Aihole as capital. Pallavas and chalukyas were often raided each other's land, especially on capitals and religious centres. Pulakeshin Il was famous ruler of chalukyas. Prashastis composed about Pulakeshin Il was composed by his court poet Ravikirti. Pulakeshin led expeditions along west to east and checked the advance of Harshavardana.
  2. The victory of chalukyas was short termed. The chalukyas and Pallavas gave way to new rulers Rashtrakuta and Chola dynasties. Most of the important administrative post were hereditary- Harishena was maha-danda-nayaka or chief judicial officer. Harishena was also a kumar-amatya (important minister) and sandhi-vigrahika (minister of war and peace). These were effective for short period of time but later there grew most powerful individuals to build their own kingdom. Samantas who worked under kings were granted with land from kings. They collected taxes and used the money for the purpose of maintaining the army. Ordinary people lives can be seen by occasional glimpse through plays and other accounts.
