Newton's Second Law says every body continues to be in its state of rest or of uniform motion in a straight line unless or until an externally applied force changes its state. This gives the definition of Force. So Force is something which when applied to a body changes the state of rest of the body or its uniform motion in a straight line. 

Force, P is a vector quantity. It has magnitude and direction. The magnitude is expressed as "mf" where m is mass and f the acceleration.  Or P = mf. The unit of measurment of Force is usually Newton.

That statement may have been true ages ago when breakdown maintenance was the norm and machines were taken for maintenance only when they broke down.
