With respect to my tenure as a tutor in the Computer Science department, this has certainly been the case. From helping to ease students of their confusion in the lab, to leading review sessions in front of spacious lecture halls, my experiences as a tutor have augmented my interpersonal as well as technical skills.

Most schools and universities focus on conveying a large amount of information to their students. But for most people that is not enough to create genuine understanding and an ability to answer exam questions. That is why many students, regardless of their ability, seek to get extra help from a personal tutor. My aim as a tutor is to create in my students a deep understanding and confidence in tackling exam questions. My approach varies depending on the student's needs and learning style. However my teaching philosophy is based on encouraging students to think for themselves, using real-world examples wherever possible. I start from topics the students are comfortable with and move gradually towards more complex areas as their confidence builds. I use questions and homework to check understanding continually. I usually focus on exam-style or past paper questions in order to check, practice and perfect the student's understanding and technique. I also give a lot of emphasis to some of the less obvious but vital skills such as essay structure and technique, logical thought, and the effective use of numbers and graphs. Where appropriate I set and mark work, giving students detailed feedback so that they can improve quickly. Since 2007 I have taught over 100 students from a wide variety of backgrounds - from nine year olds struggling with multiplication to Oxford undergraduates to 50 year olds resitting their GCSEs! Most of my tutoring is for economics and maths at A-level but I also regularly teach politics and philosophy at A-level through to postgraduate level.
