I approach tutoring in such a way that I show the students the basics, and then give them a variety of practice exercises and urge them figure out the answers themselves. If in doubt, I would keep prompting them to find the right answers thereby helping them to grasp the right concepts.

In my own case back in 2009 when I appeared for JEE I Remember that even when I couldn't recall direct formulaes to solve questions but I was able to derive formulaes as answer them with ease only due to clarity as JEE exams advanced has sufficient time but with higher difficulty level.
