Theoretical English enables students to understand the Parts of Speech, Rules, Tenses, Vocabulary, Structures, Patterns, Formations, Sayings. Practical English makes use of one's knowledge of theory and puts them into practice by Listening, Reading, Understanding, Writing and Speaking the language which together form the basis of many language courses e.g. IELTS. I get my students to read a story and ask all relevant questions to make sure they become skilled in understanding and using the language. Let us take an example, 'I am reading a book'. The student will know the parts of speech, section 1 = I - pronoun; am - auxiliary verb; reading - main verb(ing form), a - article used before a consonant sounding noun; book - noun; Section 2 = Structure/Patterns/Formations - Subject-Verb-Object; 3 = Tense - Present continuous - the tense simply reflects the time when the activity or action happens and in this particular case the activity is 'going on' hence we use the 'continuous tense'. So what I do is refer back and forth between Theory and Practicals/Practice until the candidates completely understand the relationship between the two. It takes hours and hours of intense and constant practice to hone the skills of learning and applying the language in Debates and Discussions, Seminars and Symposiums, Demonstrations and Presentations. Often in my tutoring I have seen that even this is not enough. I want students who are hungry for success.
