The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) General exam is designed to assess the English language proficiency of non-native speakers who plan to study or work in English-speaking countries. The exam is divided into four sections: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. Here is a brief syllabus for each section: Listening (30 minutes): The Listening section has four sections with ten questions each. It tests your ability to understand conversations and monologues in English. You will hear a variety of accents, including British, Australian, and North American. Reading (60 minutes): The Reading section has three sections with 40 questions. The first two sections contain passages from books, newspapers, or magazines. The third section is a passage on an educational or training topic. The texts can be factual, descriptive, or discursive, and you will be asked a variety of question types, including multiple-choice, matching, and sentence completion. Writing (60 minutes): The Writing section has two tasks. Task 1 is a letter or email, and Task 2 is an essay. You will need to demonstrate your ability to write in a clear, coherent, and grammatically correct way. In Task 1, you will be asked to write a response to a given situation or request. In Task 2, you will be asked to provide an argument, discussion or problem solution. Speaking (11-14 minutes): The Speaking section has three parts. In Part 1, you will be asked general questions about yourself and your interests. In Part 2, you will be given a topic card and have one minute to prepare your answer, after which you will speak for up to two minutes. In Part 3, you will be asked follow-up questions related to the topic in Part 2. The IELTS General exam is scored on a scale of 1-9, with 9 being the highest score. The overall score is an average of the four sections. Different institutions and countries have different score requirements for study and immigration purposes.
