French is a Romance language of the Indo-European family. It descended from the Vulgar Latin of the Roman Empire, as did all Romance languages. French has evolved from Gallo-Romance, spoken Latin in Gaul, and more specifically in Northern Gaul.

The French language is spoken in more than 41 countries officially and there are over 200 million French speakers worldwide. It is the second most widely learned foreign language after English, and the ninth most widely spoken language in the world.
