9 Ways To Improve Your Memory And Let Go Of Your Exam Worries

Sep 04, 2019

“Examination” is not just a word – it’s one of those scary monsters!

Many a times students resort to pulling their hair out of their scalps inside the exam hall just because they can’t recall an answer to a particular question. Our brains are not designed to function like computers so they will continue to store every detail tirelessly. Though the grey cells never sleep until we die, yet they need some rest and adequate supply of blood to function well.

The filling system of our brain is known as memory. It contains all the materials you have learnt. You can call it a veritable library of data.

You can ask: “How does the brain retrieve the memory?”

100 billion neurons make the brain. As we grow up, the neurons wire up to each other and transmit via thousands of synapses or connections that strengthen to form memories.

Now, it is easier for you to understand that weak memories are not going to help you in the exam desk. You have to improve your memory for getting sparkling grades.

How can you improve your memory?

Practice makes a man perfect. Try associating facts with meanings. This strategy is successfully used by professional mnemonists. For example, if you see few tightly attached words like milk, cream, sugar, sweet, you will remember the word ‘ice cream’ that is not on the list.

Do you know how ancient Romans and Greeks used to memorize?

Not many humans could read or write at that age. The politicians and lawyers used to speak at a stretch without any written notes. Cicero, the Roman lawyer, did an incredible trick. He visualized a known place like house and put numerous bits of the concerned text in various rooms. He walked through every room of the fictional house for recalling.

I suggest you few magical tricks for improving your memory and get the best in exams:-

1. Fit Body equals a Fit Mind

Sauntering before exams boosts the remembrance power. Exercise leads the brain to produce more protein called BDNF or brain-derived neurotrophic factor. Darla Castelli and Hillman, the professor duo of kinesiology and community health studied that physical activities increase the cognitive control resulting in the improvement in academic achievement. You can do aerobics, yoga, simple walking, jogging, etc. for the purpose. It reduces the stress hormones.

2. Become a teacher

A teacher cannot explain problems to the students if he or she is not completely accustomed with the subject. Why don’t you try group studies?
Explore with your class mates. Teach each other what you have understood. If you can elaborate in details about the topic, you will know which portion is done and which is still left out.

If nobody is interested in a joint venture, do it with your pets or toys. Imagine them as a group of fellow students.

3. Read loudly

Read your text books or notes louder. Scientific research says that reading out loud helps in almost 50% up-gradation of memory.

4. Drink coffee

We already know that caffeine helps in enhancing our minds. Studies have found out that consuming a caffeine pill after learning something improvises the memory recall up to almost 24 hours later.

5. Chew gum

Renowned health professional Dr. Susan Lark uttered that chewing gum can improve the memory.

A study was done on 75 adults. They were divided into three groups and sent for memory test of twenty minutes. During the trial, the first group chewed gum; the second group imitated chewing but without gum in their mouths, and the third group didn’t chew at all. It was seen that the gum chewers got 24% higher score on recalling word instantly and 36% higher on postponed word recalling.

It raises the activity of Hippocampus. It also helps in increase of oxygen that boosts the attention and concentration. Try it now.

6. Mind mapping

Creating mental connections promotes intelligence and resourcefulness. The visual form of taking notes presents a topic’s overview and the critical information. You are what you eat. Junk foods are tempting. It makes your mind anxious and body inactive. Your mind will wander everywhere resulting in zero concentration on your text books. Avoid too spicy or sugary food. Ban the fries from your plate. Have fresh fruits, vegetables, fish, eggs, nuts, lean meat, milk, etc. that are power packed with nutrients.

9. Sleep well

You may stay awake for the whole night without tiring yourself for those apparently ‘cool’ chats and social media posts. In reality, you are harming your grey matters. Sleeping for at least 7-8 hours is a must for everyone. If you can, take a nap. Several studies have shown that memory is initially recorded in our brain (hippocampus). We can forget if we force ourselves to mug more information. Napping pushes our minds into the permanent storage part called “neocortex”.  A well rested brain is an incredible storehouse of data.
