Make a Career Out of Staying Fit – Become a Fitness Trainer
- Apr 12, 2014
The fitness industry in India is experiencing a renewed vigour. As per a FICCI-PwC report the fitness and wellness industry in India will be worth Rs.100,000 crore by 2015. With annual growth rates of 15% to 17%, the industry will have generated nearly 30 million jobs between 2013 and 2015.
What is driving this immense growth in fitness market?
In recent years Indians have become increasingly health conscious. Rising disposable incomes and growing competition in the fitness segment, means that erstwhile expensive health-club subscriptions have become much more affordable.
However, it is not just about looking good on the outside that is driving the focus on fitness. Being healthy has become essential to surviving modern day life. The changes in our diets and lifestyles has resulted in increasing incidence of obesity, diabetes, cancer, heart attacks, and other stress-related diseases. It is not surprising then that Indians are more than ever before willing to spend on fitness.
Besides the typical gym facilities such as weightlifting and aerobics, local fitness centres have started offering everything from yoga, Pilates, spin cycling, to Bollywood styled dance classes, martial arts (karate, kickboxing, tai chi) and many other forms of exercise.
This has also led to a spurt in health magazines, health websites, and fitness chains in the country. India is regarded as an important emerging market for major international fitness clothing and equipment brands, such as Nike and Adidas.
All these trends mean that there is an incredible demand for fitness experts in the country. However, the industry is plagued by a huge shortage of trained workforce, in particular fitness trainers.
Fitness trainer – Do you have it in you?
With growing industry rates and shortfall in skilled trainers, becoming a fitness trainer is certainly a career worth exploring. However, like any other profession, this job is not for everyone.
To assess if being a fitness instructor is something you can do for the rest of your life, answer the following questions truthfully –
- Are you passionate about health and fitness?
- Have you always been actively exercising, playing sports during your school / college years?
- Do you have good inter-personal and communication skills?
- Are you a high-energy individual?
- Do you have the patience and determination needed to excel in this field?
If you have answered ‘yes’ to these 5 questions, then you have most of the personal attributes that a personal trainer must possess.
Established fitness chains such as Nike, Reebok, and Tawalkar’s offer their own training courses for becoming a fitness instructor. These courses combine practical and theoretical training on various aspects of fitness, diet and nutrition, and human anatomy.
Other prominent institutes offering these courses include Sports Authority of India (SAI), Lakshmibai National Institute of Physical Education, Indira Gandhi Institute of Physical Education & Sports Sciences (IGIPESS), and Symbiosis Department of Health Sciences.
A number of universities also offer Bachelors in Physical Education (BPEd.) and Masters in Physical Education (MPEd.) courses.
Fitness today is a highly specialised field. Besides the initial training period, you would have to keep abreast of the latest developments in the fitness industry.
While the starting salary is not that great, established fitness trainers can command an hourly fee of Rs 1000 to Rs.1500.
As a fitness trainer, you can be work for hotels, gyms, tourist resorts, academic institutions, sports authorities, or even individuals looking for personal trainers. In fact, personal trainers working with celebrities, are among the best paid in the fitness business. Having garnered work experience, you can also write for health magazines and journals, or set up your own exercise studio.
The desire to look and feel good is here to stay. If health and fitness is your passion, then it can also be a very viable career option for you.
