COVID-19 Alert – What Should You Do?

Mar 18, 2020

The World Health Organization has already declared the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) a pandemic. The number of affected cases also continues to rise exponentially.
In the midst of this chaos, here’s everything you can do to protect yourself and your family.

Know the signs

Confirmed COVID-19 cases include minor to severe symptoms and even deaths (the mortality rate increases substantially with senior citizens and people with previous respiratory conditions like asthma at risk).

The following symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure.

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Breathing difficulties

What should be your precautionary measures?

Wash your hands frequently

Wash your hands with an alcohol-based sanitizer or soap and water regularly.

Reason - Washing your hands with soap and water or an alcohol-based sanitizer kills the virus on your hand.

Maintain social distance

Maintain a distance of at least 1 meter (3 feet) between yourself and anyone who is coughing or sneezing.
Reason - when someone sneezes or coughs, he/she spreads tiny liquid droplets from his/her nose or mouth that may contain the virus. In case you are too close to the infected person, you heavily increase your chances of catching the COVID-19 virus.

Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth

Reason - Hands can touch many surfaces in contact with the virus. Once they are contaminated, they can easily transfer the virus to your nose, mouth, or eyes. The virus can then easily enter your body and make you sick.

Practice breathing hygiene

Ensure you and the people around you follow good breathing hygiene. This means that when you cough or sneeze, cover your mouth and nose with your elbows or tissues. Then dispose of the used tissues immediately.

Cause - Droplets spread the virus. By following a good breathing hygiene, you can protect people around you from colds, flu, and viruses like COVID-19.

And finally…

  • Practice social isolation by staying at home in case you are feeling unwell even with mild symptoms like a runny nose or headache. Why? Avoiding outside contact and visiting treatment facilities will help you manage these symptoms more effectively, and protect you and others from potential COVID-19 and other viruses.
  • If you have fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical attention immediately as it can cause respiratory infections or other serious conditions. Why? This is going to help you get the proper medical treatment in the right time. It will also help prevent the potential spread of COVID-19 and other viruses.
