All about Mathematical Olympiad

Mathematical Olympiads are organized in order to identify mathematical talents for the pre-university candidates. In India, Regional Mathematical Olympiad is the primary step for a student from India to avail the opportunity to represent the country in International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). International Mathematical Olympiad is the international championship of Mathematics for all the high school candidates.
The students who pass the Regional Mathematical Olympiad (RMO) are qualified to appear for Indian National Mathematical Olympiad, also known as INMO. It is conducted by Homi Bhabha Center of Science Education or HBCSE’s Mathematical Olympiad cell under aegis of NBHM (National Board of Higher Mathematics). Here are the details of four stages of Math Olympiad competition available for the high school pupils.
Regional Mathematical Olympiad (RMO)
This competition is organized in different regions usually between September and December’s first Sunday every year. The duration of written test is three hours and the participants have to solve nearly six to seven mathematical problems. The high school candidates till class 12 may appear for RMO. The interested students usually contact coordinator of Regional Mathematical Olympiad for enrolment, fee and other relevant information.
RMO is divided into two tests, the duration of the first one is 2 hours while the second one continues for 3 hours. The first test comprises MCQ type questions and in the other test, the participants have to solve six to seven mathematical problems. In the current time, nearly thirty to thirty five students are selected from each region for the next level of examination, i.e. INMO. Nearly six pupils are chosen from Class 12.
Indian National Mathematical Olympiad (INMO)
Each year INMO is organized on first Sunday of the month of February at different regions of India. The duration of this written test is 4 hours. One common question module is followed throughout India. Only top thirty to thirty-five top performer receive merit certificates.
International Mathematical Olympiad Training Camp (IMOTC)
Those who receive INMO certificates have the opportunity to attend International Mathematical Olympiad Training Camp. This one month long Olympiad training camp is organized between May and June every year. Plus, the previous year’s INMO awardees who have finished postal tuition for the whole year are invited for second phase of training.
International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO)
One leader as well as deputy leader is chosen by National Board of Higher Mathematics from amongst the mathematical researchers or teachers involved with Olympiad activity. This team chosen at end of camp along with the leader as well as deputy leader represent the country at IMO that is organized in the month of July in IMO’s other member country on a yearly basis. IMO comprises two tests organized on two separate days with gap of at least one single day. The duration of these tests are 4 and ½ hours.
Syllabus for the Mathematics Olympiads
The syllabus for Mathematical Olympiads for all the three levels is class nine and class 12 standard mathematics. Geometry, integers, quadratic equations, trigonometry, linear equations, coordinate geometry, factorization of the polynomial, probability theory, number theory, complex numbers, permutations as well as combination, finite series, basic graph theory and few more. However calculus as well as statistics are excluded from the syllabus.

Know all the topics thoroughly
Although there is prescribed syllabus for Regional Mathematical Olympiad, there is hardly any examination pattern. However it is highly recommended that you develop sufficient knowledge of topics being included in the syllabus. There are several Math Olympiad preparation courses available for the students. You can avail one for better performance in the examination.
Develop clear understanding
Understand the concepts and acquire basic skills necessary to solve the mathematical problems. Initially you must avoid spending time in solving difficult problems and going over the study material time and again. Start with easy problems and then go for the difficult ones later.
Once you have grasped the relevant concepts and ideals, you must devote time to practice more and more. Allot at least one to two hours a day in order to practice mathematics for five or six months. Try to solve diverse types of mathematical problems. If you are able to solve them easily then you must be assured that your choice of mathematical problems must be improved.
Identify weak as well as strong portions
While solving diverse problems, you must find out both your weak as well as strong points. Focus on geometry, number theory, combinatorics and so on.
Solve model papers
Solve last year examination papers and become acquainted with pattern or structure of test and also get idea of high standard required. Use these materials and do not just follow comprehensive question bank.
Good memory is one of the pre-requisites to crack Mathematical Olympiad. Knowing important theorems as well as results at fingertips will allow you save your time as well as energy.
Read questions properly
Even if any problem appears to be easy and simple, you must read it carefully for more at least two times. Problems set on the Olympiads are bit tough and call for student’s intelligence and sharpness.
Do not stress your mind
If you stuck with a particular question, leave it for the time being. Don’t waste time and shift it to other problems. If the time permits, you must try to solve the ones you already left earlier. Revise the answers thoroughly before you submit the paper.
